Blessed with abundant year-classes of walleyes, the lake offers not only many “eater” size walleyes (they taste so good), but an excellent opportunity for very large fish. Once can also find excellent fishing for white bass, smallmouth bass and catfish, but the star attraction has to be the walleyes. There is great wiper fishing, and with the number of large wipers in Colorado, the short drive to Nebraska can produce trophy fish. Big Mac is one of the premier fisheries in the Western states. “You can be, literally, feet from the water and camp right there.”īut arguably the real draw at McConaughy is the fishing. “The beach area is a little more limited in some years with the high water, but there are lots of great mowed camping areas right next to the lake,” said Elise Lockhart of the Keith County Visitors Committee. If camping isn’t your style, there are different motels and restaurants within minutes of the lake in nearby Ogallala. Note: When camping on the sandy beach, a four-wheel drive is recommended. It’s one of the only parks in the region to allow “primitive” camping along the shores of the lake, with miles and miles of access to pitch a tent or pull in an RV. McConaughy offers traditional campsites with a variety of hookups, half of which can be reserved, and the other half are first-come first-served.
